Don't you just hate it when your account is stuck with the country or region you selected for your PlayStation Network's account? Like why can't all games be region free from the start? The two other ways that I have tried to get access to another country or region is by creating a new PlayStation Network account or use a VPN, which they both sound like a lot of work. With the new PlayStation 5 released on the shelves this 2020, the announcement got a large amount of the gaming community's attention and everyone has been really excited to get one for themselves. The PlayStation 5 is on such a high demand that it ran out of stock in some places too. That got me wondering, do gamers that are buying the new console not care about region locking anymore? Or is the PlayStation 5 not region-locked anymore?
We have good news! Sony discouraged developers from region-locking their games. According to Sony, the PlayStation 5 will not be region locked. The advantages of being region free is that you can play games and watch movies outside of your country. Physical game discs will also work in any region.
In this post, we will be sharing about some of the exciting perks of being region free for the PlayStation 5. We will also be explaining on what exactly is region-locking and how does it work. So, if you are a first timer that is hearing about this topic, stay a little longer and find out with us!
Is PlayStation 5 Region Locked?
Referring to the good news from above, we now know that the brand new console, PlayStation 5, is not region locked. But what does it mean exactly? Is it going to affect any of the games that we've bought online? What about our disc collection? Do physical discs work on the console? What other perks should we know about and what other information should we know about this announcement? We will be answering all of those questions below!
What Does Region-Locking Do?
Region-locking video game system is a technological measure that is needed to be followed as it is a class of digital rights management. The reason behind region-locking is to ensure that each region's criteria is fulfilled. Different countries have its own legal restrictions, different age ratings and different cultural acceptance that sellers have to comply to. Of course, there are other more business related reasons for region-locking, which is to stagger the release of a product, to avoid losing sales, to maximize the impact of the product or to prevent certain users from accessing certain content. Creators also want to have control of how their content is being distributed to make royalties. Hence, region-locking isn't necessary an evil system that is created by developers. It is more for management purposes.
In case you're curious, here are the main regions:
- Japan and Asia
- North America and South America
- Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Middle East, India, South Africa (PAL region)
Basically, the definition of region-locking in the world of consoles refers to when a console can only play games that are released in specific region, territory or even country. To put it in a simple way of explanation, if you own a Japanese Nintendo 3Ds, you can only play games that are released for the Japanese Nintendo 3Ds. The same example applies to the American Nintendo 3Ds too. You get the jist of it!
The way it works is when the system detects the user's IP address. Every computer has an IP address that serves as an identifying number that is associated with a computer and its network. When we create our PlayStation Network account, we are required to select a region or country. Once we have selected our location, our console can only run games that are released in the region we're in. This can be quite frustrating as we have to buy games that matches our region or else it will not work. It used to be a problem that many people complain about. What if you need to move to another country? More importantly, what if the game you want is only released in a specific region? That was most gamer's complain but with Sony and Nintendo's announcement of going region-free, these two consoles will probably be getting more customers!
The Advantages of Being Region Free
Being region free means that you won't have to wait for the game that you've been eyeing on since its release in Japan, or being limited from using Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, and other platforms! This also means that Sony will be able to reach out to a wider audience since users can now play a lot more games on their brand new console. This announcement is going to make a lot of gamers happy now that we found out that the PlayStation 5 supports backwards compatibility and going region free.
Here's what you can do on the PlayStation 5 now:
- We will be able to play digital PS4 and PS5 games from any region
- We will be able to play physical PS4 and PS5 games from any region
- We will be able to play some PS3 and PS2 game from any region
- Ultra HD 4K Blu Rays will work from any region
What to keep in mind:
Sony claimed that most PS4 and PS5 games will work with very few exceptions. Some Ubisoft games might not be able to run on the consoles.
As mentioned, Sony has been discouraging developers from region-locking, which means more games will be released for everyone to play! No more waiting for release dates and more gaming! There is one thing that we have to keep in mind. Let's say a Japanese game that you want is released but you can't read or understand Japanese, you might have to deal with it or wait for the English version to be out. I think that's about the only thing that would be a problem when it comes to games. I grew up playing Japanese games even though I spoke and read zero Japanese, but here I am, understanding basic Japanese today!
PlayStation Plus Subscriber Perks!
If you have a PlayStation Plus account, Sony has confirmed that subscribers will still get two free PS4 games per month for the foreseeable future. Sony also said that their goal is to add PS5 games regularly to the monthly games lineup. PlayStation Plus subscribers who owns a PS5 can claim the game, Bugsnax, for free as well as a number of PS4 classic games that can be claimed through the PlayStation Plus Collection.
Subscribing to PlayStation Plus is probably my greatest investment! If you play games often and wants a large collection of game, I would definitely recommend you to subscribe to PlayStation Plus.
What Can We Look Forward To In The Future of PlayStation 5?
The PlayStation 5 will certainly have an exciting future as the console itself is built with amazing technology. The DualSense Controller looks like the future and functions like the future! The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on the controller will enhance your gaming experience to the next level. The new UI is amazing and has a simple look. There are other accessories that users can invest in to amplify their PlayStation 5 experience. And now with the announcement of PlayStation 5 going region free? It is only the beginning for this console.
Here are a list of well-known games coming in 2021 that you should keep an eye on:
- God of War: Ragnarok
- Horizon Forbidden West
- Kena: Bridge of Spirits
- Ghostwire: Tokyo
- Gotham Knights
- Guilty Gear Strive
- Far Cry 6
- Witcher 3
- GTA V
This console will probably be relevant for the next 5 years according to my personal prediction. PlayStation has more exclusive titles of games than any other consoles. Hence, I think the PlayStation 5 has the best value for all of its newly upgraded gaming technology that can enhance your gaming experience. If you get the PlayStation 5, you will be paying for a quality console and you will get a large selection of games to choose from.
I think that Sony has made a great decision on removing region-locking. This is because the benefits of this change can go a long way for the gaming world of PlayStation 5. Consumers were a little worried that the PlayStation 5 might have lesser games due to reasons like other new consoles being released, as well as Zenimax Media being bought by XBox. Zenimax, which is the parent company of Bethesda, publishes awesome games like the Fall Out series, DOOM, Elder Scroll and so on. The news had some people reconsidering their choice of console, but I think with the PlayStation 5 being region free is going to bring us so many more games in the future! That is all the information I have on today's topic. Good luck in your future gaming endeavors and have lots of fun! Stay crazy and game on.
